The program aims to integrate and generate an advanced and in-depth knowledge in specific field of Forensic Engineering in professional practices. This program combines four main areas which relates to the failure of structural and construction in civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering.

The purpose of a forensic engineering investigation is to locate cause or causes of failure with a view to improve performance or life of a component, or to assist a court in determining the facts of an accident.

Forensic engineers often are used in product’s, design’s or object’s failure.

This programme comprises of 46 credits.

Forensic engineers apply scientific methodology to investigate the failures of materials, components, products and structures. Forensic engineers are usually called upon to isolate the specific reason or reasons a product, device or substance failed in order to improve the longevity or performance of the product or to improve its safety profile. Forensic engineers often are used in product liability cases, a type of civil court case, and, occasionally, criminal cases, to investigate and testify about the source of a product's, design's or object's failure.
Most manufacturing models will have a forensic component that monitors early failures to improve quality or efficiencies. Insurance companies use forensic engineers to prove liability or nonliability. Most engineering disasters (structural failures such as bridge and building collapses) are subject to forensic investigation by engineers experienced in forensic methods of investigation. Rail crashes, aviation accidents, and some automobile accidents are investigated by forensic engineers in particular where component failure is suspected. Furthermore, appliances, consumer products, medical devices, structures, industrial machinery, and even simple hand tools such as hammers or chisels can warrant investigations upon incidents causing injury or property damages. The failure of medical devices is often safety-critical to the user, so reporting failures and analysing them is particularly important. The environment of the body is complex, and implants must both survive this environment, and not leach potentially toxic impurities. Problems have been reported with breast implants, heart valves, and catheters, for example. These are some of the applications of where forensic engineers are needed and sought after.
In general, it can be said that:
1.
Since safety is usually the most important aspects in any situations, the need to have a personnel thathas knowledge in forensic engineering is very essential.
2.
The graduates of this programme can easily be hired or needed in many companies, industries ororganizations.
3.
Engineers from the four (4) fields involved can become the key person in any investigation related tofailures.
4.
Among the agencies that require the forensic engineering experts are Jabatan Keselamatan danKesihatan Pekerja (JKKP), Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM)and all local authorities.
