Nuclear Engineering programme is to train and prepare students to become nuclear engineers with the capability in designing, producing, constructing, RnD, maintenance, sales, consultancy, education, and training. Nuclear engineering deals with the practical application of nuclear processes. Nuclear engineering is based upon the extensive use of mathematics and physical principles. These principles are applied to radioactivity, nuclear interactions, and the interaction of radiation with materials. Further applications require the knowledge of energy removal and conversion, materials science, instrumentation and control, and chemistry. This program also embeds the knowledge of artificial intelligence for nuclear engineer as well as green and sustainable energy technologies. The programme was designed in such a graduate should be able to perform tasks and functions for a nuclear power program that require primarily nuclear-related qualifications, both in design and construction and in the operation of a nuclear power plant and in other nuclear related industries.

Total credit : 135 credits
(a) Program core: 110 credits
(b) Pogram electives: 6 credits
(c) Free electives : 3 credits
(c) University courses: 16 credits

PEO 1 : Become competent holistic professionals in chemical engineering or related industries
PEO 2 : Contribute towards sustainable development through knowledge and innovative technologies to prosper lives

PLO1 Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing and engineering fundamentals, and petroleum engineering to develop solutions to complex engineering problems.

PLO 2 Identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences with holistic considerations for sustainable development.

PLO 3 Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes to meet identified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon as well as resource, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations as required.

PLO 4 Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research methods including research-based knowledge, design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.

PLO 5 Create, select and apply, and recognize limitation of appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to complex engineering problems.

PLO 6 Analyze and evaluate sustainable development impacts to: society, the economy, sustainability, health and safety, legal frameworks, and the environment, in solving complex engineering problems.

PLO 7 Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and norms of engineering practice and adhere to relevant national and international laws. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for diversity and inclusion.

PLO 8 Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse, and inclusive teams and in multidisciplinary, face-to-face, remote and distributed settings.

PLO 9 Communicate effectively and inclusively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentations, make effective presentations, taking into account cultural, language, and learning differences.

PLO 10 Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, and to manage projects in multidisciplinary environments.

PLO 11 Recognise the need for, and have the preparation and ability for independent and life-long learning adaptability to new and emerging technologies and
critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change

Nuclear engineering fields cover a wide area of career opportunities in energy, medicine, security, environment, and satellites. Nuclear engineering program offered by UTM does not only focuses on producing holistic graduates in nuclear engineering but also allows them to be universal, versatile, and flexible in both nuclear and non-nuclear sectors. Most of the Nuclear Engineering UTM graduates find employment in the public sectors such as government agencies, universities, hospitals and in the private sectors such as Semiconductor, Oil and Gas Maintenance, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), Radiation Protection Officers, Manufacturing, and Application Engineering. The rest of them further their studies in nuclear engineering and also in other disciplines such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, gas engineering, bioprocess, and energy management.
