The Doctor of Education (EdD) at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Technology (FEST), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), is a professional doctorate designed specifically for educators, school leaders, and policy-makers. Unlike a traditional PhD which is purely research-based, the EdD is a mixed-mode program that balances advanced coursework with a research dissertation focused on solving real-world educational challenges.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All candidates must meet the general admission requirements for UTM postgraduate programmes as outlined in the Guidelines for Evaluating Student Admission Requirements to UTM Postgraduate Programmes, Amendment 1/2013, which was approved in Senate Meeting No. 10/2012/2013 dated 19 April 2013.

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR EdD PROGRAMME

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from UTM or from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; and
A Master’s degree or equivalent from UTM or from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; and
Two (2) years of work experience in education or a related field
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

English language competency is not mandatory for local students.
International students applying for postgraduate programmes at UTM must meet one of the following English language competency requirements:
Malaysian University English Test (MUET) with a minimum score of Band 4.0 or higher; or
IELTS/IELTS Online with a minimum score of Band 6.0 or higher; or
TOEFL iBT/TOEFL Online with a minimum score of 60 or higher; or
Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), C2 Proficiency (CPE), or Linguaskill with a minimum score of 169 or higher; or
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic with a minimum score of 59 or higher; or
Certified Intensive English Programme Level (CIEP Level) with Level 109 or higher.
Exemptions from the English language requirements may be granted to international students from countries where English is the official language, or to those who have obtained academic qualifications from institutions where English is the sole medium of instruction, and who intend to pursue further studies in Malaysia.
International students who do not meet the above requirements may enrol in the Intensive English Programme (IEP) at UTM’s Language Academy or the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) at any ELS Language Centre in Malaysia for a maximum duration of one year from the date of registration. Upon completing the programme, students must take MUET or any of the examinations listed in (a) to (f) to qualify for admission into their main academic programme at UTM.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS VIA APEL A (T8)

Must be at least 35 years old at the time of applying for the programme.
Must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent or higher (Examples: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma).
Must have at least 5 years of working experience in the field of Education or a related field after completing a Bachelor’s Degree programme.
Must pass the APEL.A assessment for the doctoral level.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates are required to submit a 500–1,000-word brief research proposal at the time of application.

PREREQUISITE COURSE: YHPP1013 FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION

Starting from the 2023/24 semester 1 session, doctoral candidates without qualifications in education or relevant work experience must pass YHPP Foundations of Education in the first semester.
Students may enrol in the university elective course while fulfilling the prerequisite.
Passing the prerequisite is compulsory in order to defend the proposal.
The requirement to undertake this course is mentioned in the offer letter.
