Doctor of Philosophy at Academy of Islamic Civilisation, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is an advanced research-based program designed to enable students to conduct independent and in-depth research in the broad field of Islamic studies. Under close academic supervision, students will produce a doctoral thesis that makes a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding in their chosen area. The program typically takes between 3 to 8 years to complete and covers a wide range of research areas including Islamic History and Civilisation, Aqidah and Islamic Thought, Da’wah and Leadership, Al-Quran and Hadith, Islamic Economics and Finance, Shariah and Law, Calligraphy and Islamic Arts, Manuscript Studies, Islamic Medicine and Therapy, Islamic Education, and Islamic Psychology and Psychotherapy.

PLO 1: Apply critical and integrative knowledge to manage and solve complex issues or problems through research, using latest techniques, tools, and advanced skills to make decisions and come up with new ideas and solutions

PLO 7: Demonstrate skills in designing, critical evaluation, and analysing numerical and graphical data using quantitative or qualitative tools in solving problems.
PLO 8: Demonstrate leadership, professionalism and management skills, and take full responsibility for own work, and significantly for others in the research organization.
PLO 9: Take full responsibility for own work and where relevant be accountable for overall management of one’s research organization and professional development.
PLO 10: Demonstrate entrepreneurial characteristics.
PLO 11: Demonstrate adherence to legal, ethical and professional codes of practice as a postgraduate student.

1. A Master degree with honours in a relevant field from UTM or any other institutions of higher learning recognized by the UTM Senate; or
2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master degree and experience in the relevant field recognized by the UTM Senate; or
3. Candidate who is currently registered in a Master degree programme at UTM, and approved by the Graduate Studies Committee of the respective faculty and the UTM Senate

Requirement for international students
Students must have a valid two-year TOEFL certificate with PBT score of 600 or above (IBT/CBT equivalent) or IELTS Band 7.
