The Master of Engineering (Structure) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a specialized postgraduate programme designed to develop highly skilled professionals in the field of structural engineering. The programme provides in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in structural analysis, design, construction, and rehabilitation, preparing graduates to address complex engineering challenges in the built environment. Rooted in UTM’s vision of being a leading global institution in education and research, this programme integrates advanced engineering principles with cutting-edge innovation and sustainability practices.
Aligned with UTM’s mission to develop holistic talent and enhance societal well-being through knowledge and technological innovation, the programme emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and research-driven solutions. Students will engage in specialized coursework covering finite element analysis, prestressed and precast concrete design, structural reliability, bridge and tall building engineering, as well as emerging fields such as seismic retrofitting, structural fire engineering, and modular construction. Through rigorous academic training and industry-relevant projects, graduates will gain the ability to design resilient structures that withstand environmental and operational demands while adhering to the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
The programme also places strong emphasis on ethical professionalism, leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students will develop the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, communicate technical findings to diverse stakeholders, and uphold social responsibility in engineering practices. In line with UTM’s core values of integrity, synergy, excellence, and sustainability, the programme fosters a culture of lifelong learning, encouraging graduates to continuously advance their expertise and contribute to the development of science, technology, and engineering.
Graduates of this programme will be well-equipped to pursue careers in structural consulting, construction management, research, and academia. Whether advancing within the industry or engaging in pioneering research, they will play a vital role in shaping the future of structural engineering through innovation, resilience, and sustainable development.
The Master of Engineering (Structure) program consists of a total of 46 credits, covering core courses, design projects, electives, and research components. The curriculum is structured across three semesters, allowing students to progressively develop expertise in structural engineering. The core courses (21 credits) provide a strong foundation in advanced structural analysis, reinforced concrete design, structural dynamics, and steel design. Alongside core subjects, students undertake two major research projects (Research Project I & II) and two comprehensive design projects (Design Project I & II), contributing 10 credits toward hands-on experience in real-world structural problem-solving.
Students are also required to complete five elective courses (15 credits) from a selection of specialized topics, such as Finite Element Method, Bridge Engineering, Seismic Engineering, Wind and Offshore Structures, and AI in Structural Engineering. The study plan is strategically designed, with Semester I (15 credits) focusing on fundamental knowledge and analysis skills, Semester II (16 credits) integrating research, design, and elective courses, and Semester III (15 credits) emphasizing applied research and design implementation.
To successfully graduate, students must earn a minimum of 46 credits, complete both research and design projects, and maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.0. This structured curriculum ensures that graduates are equipped with the technical expertise, analytical skills, and research proficiency required to excel in the field of structural engineering.
After 3 to 5 years of employment, graduates are expected to be professionals with the following attributes:
