The doctor of philosophy in Petroleum Engineering is designed to address the need for skilled Petroleum Engineering scientists, professionals, and research fellows by integrating knowledge of petroleum engineering, research and analytical skills. The programme targets both postgraduates and experienced candidates with the aims to provide quality post-graduate education to enhance the career opportunity and development of candidates. The programme offered full-time at the UTM Johor Bahru campus with access to the laboratories, computer labs and other nessecities for research. This programme is open to candidates with a master’s degree in Science, Technology, or Engineering. Graduates from other disciplines with more than five years' experience in the oil and gas industry are encouraged and welcomed to apply. The minimum study duration is 3 years (6 semesters), and the maximum is 8 years (16 semesters).

Gas engineer has been in high demand to meet the increasing manpower requirement to support the numerous gas projects. These are in the area of gas liquefaction, gas processing, petrochemical processing and the delivery of gas to the power plant, industrial user, commercial center, domestic consumer throughout peninsular Malaysia.
